Ken Garfield spoke with over 60 Sunlighters on October 22, 2005. Ken discussed the correlation between the subscribers of newspapers dwindling and the neighborhood church membership dwindling. He believes is due to a transient society. When people live in a location for under 6 years, they go to a mega church if they go to church. They don't want to get involved in community. He, also, discussed three major trends he sees as in churches as he travels throughout Mecklenburg county. The first trend is toward non-denominationalism. People today don't like institutions. Southern Baptist are fairing better than other denominations because of the autonomy of the church and the mission mindedness. The second trend is toward the mega church where you don't have to be involved and everything is there from your child's school, to a Christian bookstore, to the gym. And the third trend is the mono-cultural, mono-race, and mono-age groups of most churches. It was very enlightening and enjoyed by all present. |
